We step onto the 'elevator' (a modified window-washing rig), and look down into the hole as we begin a slow descent. The guide explains more about the geology of the volcano as we look at the layers in the walls. Apparently, this is the only dormant volcano in the world where you can go inside. Most of the time, the magma cools and hardens in place -- but for some reason, it drained out of this one while still liquid (about 4000 years ago), creating a cavern.

We reach the bottom, and the elevator takes the previous tour group back up. We learn more about the volcano and explore for about 30 minutes -- walking around the cavernous chamber.

Red and yellow rocks, created from the oxidation of iron and sulfur, decorate the walls. Water drips down through the porous rocks like a light rain. After a bit more exploring, it's time to go back up.
