Not many people can say they've been inside (and gotten out) of a volcano -- and this attraction is relatively new (it opened in 2012). You might think a volcano would be hot -- but it was actually chilly in there. But at the end of the adventure, we're treated to a hot bowl of traditional Icelandic "meat soup" -- which was delicious, and a very civilized way to end a tour.

In Iceland, "meat" always means lamb -- so it's basically a nice lamb and vegetable soup (and a vegetarian version was available too). This soup was a common item on menus throughout the trip, and was always good.

One last scenic view from the volcanic dome on the walk back to the ski lodge, and back to Reykjavik. It's still early in the afternoon, and there's time to visit the Reykjavik National Gallery & sculpture museum, explore town some more and even visit the local mall.

The mall is definitely for locals (a bit off the tourist radar), and it was interesting to see so many familiar stores there (like Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Subway, Dominoes Pizza, KFC, Timberland, and many others, plus some local stores I didn't know -- although no Starbucks or McDonalds here, yet).
