The next stop is Sólheimasandur beach (although if you're visiting, this is one destination you should skip). A long path here provides access to an old plane wreck that has somehow become a tourist destination. Better beaches with better views are available at nicer locations nearby. But not knowing this at the time, I follow the many other tourists down the long path on this cold, windy day.

The path to the 'beach' follows this gravel walkway for almost 2 hours. The scenery never changes, and the icy wind cuts through everyone who visits. I consider turning back -- but having invested this much time already, might as well see it to the end.

At the end of the long, tedious walk (about 6+ miles, round trip) is the 'destination' everyone is here for. It's the carcass of an old airplane that's been abandoned for years. Somehow because everyone else is doing it, the rest just follow along -- and it's become a tourist spot mentioned in the guidebooks. Other than the plane, and a bit of the coastline in the far distance, there's nothing to see or do here except to turn around for the long drag back to the car.
